Oriental Black Laquered Box With Parrot and Blossom Decoration To Lid

Beautiful old laquered box believed to date to the early part of the 20th century (circa 1920s / 30s) - ideal for storing all types of jewellery, keepsake treasures and trinkets.

The lid displays a colourful parrot perched on a branch surrounded by cherry blossom on a black ground. The rest of the box has plain red laquerwork to all sides and base.

Plain black laquered interior. There is a circlular Mon mark to the lid. also the remnants of a paper stamp to the underside of the base

Measurements: Approx 7.75 Inches x 7.00 Inches x 3.00 Inches (19.50 cms x 17.00 cms x 5.50 cms)

For its age and usage this piece is in very good condition overall - particularly the superbly hand decorated lid.

Apart from the usual signs of wear / scuffing to the edges to be expected commensurate with age and use, there is some light marking, loss / damage to the exterior lacquered finish- mainly to the front panel - and some age related shrinkage to the wood / cracking to the base lacquer (as seen in the photos).

The hinged lid works well - opening and closing without issue.

The interior surfaces are in very good clean & tidy condition.

There is a key to the working lock mechanism but unfortunately the lock keeper to the lid is no longer present and therefore the box cannot be locked. There may also have been an escutcheon plate for the keyhole but this also is no longer present.
